| Title | 언어학적 담화분석을 통한 여호수아 3- 4장의 구조이해 |

| Abstract | 여호수아 3-4장의 구성에 대하여 많은 토론들이 있다. 그 이유는 글의 흐름이 자연스럽지 않고, 반복되는 내용이 많으며, 문맥과 상충되는 것처럼 보이는 내용들이 있기 때문이다. 따라서 본문의 문학적, 신학적 통일성이 부정되는 경우가 많다(Noth, Soggin, Butler, Görg, Nelson 등). 하지만 이것은 오늘날의 문학적 기준과 다른 고대 이스라엘의 문학적 관례에 대한 오해나 무지에서 비롯된 것일 수 있다. 여러 학자들이 이런 인식을 공유하는 가운데 여호수아 3-4장에서 문학적, 신학적 통일성을 찾으려고 노력한다(Seydon, Polzin, Peckham, 등). 이들의 연구는 여호수아 3-4장을 통일적으로 읽을 가능성을 보여준다. 하지만 여기에도 해석자의 시각이 본문보다 앞설 위험은 존재한다. 이는 폴진이 여호수아 4:14에서 “이스라엘 종교의 보완성”을 읽어내거나 팩햄이 여호수아 3-4장에서 “둘러싸기 체계”를 발견하는 것에서 엿볼 수 있는 일이다. 해석에서 주관성을 탈피하기 위해서는 본문을 언어학적 차원에서 자세히 분석할 필요가 있다. 딸스트라(E. Talstra)에 따르면, “본문의 연결관계를 나타내는 표시로서 언어학적 현상에 주목하는 일은 본문의 구조에 접근하는 통로를 갖는다는 것을 의미한다.” 따라서 필자는 이 연구에서 언어학적 담화분석을 통해 여호수아 3-4장의 구성을 파악하려고 시도하였다. 이 분석은 여호수아 3-4장이 주로 등장인물들(관리들, 여호수아, 여호와)의 말(명령)과 이 말에 순종하는 백성의 모습에 대한 서술로 이루어져 있다는 사실을 알려준다. 내러티브 맥락에서 등장인물의 말이 연이어 나타나는 것은 본문의 관심이 시간 순에 따른 사건의 자연스러운 전개보다도 사건의 의미를 다차원적으로 드러내는데 있다는 것을 나타낸다. 여호수아 3-4장의 구성이 복잡해 보이는 이유가 여기에 있다. 등장인물의 말은 사건의 전개를 지연시키며 동일한 말이나 표현의 반복을 수반하기 때문이다. 여호수아 3-4장에는 또한 “되돌아가기”와 “다시 시작하기” 기법도 사용되었다. 저자는 이를 통해 한꺼번에 모든 것을 다 말하지 않고 긴장을 유발시키는 가운데 요단강 도하와 관련된 중요한 일들을 하나씩 차례로 풀어낸다. 종합하면, 여호수아 3-4장은 출처가 다른 여러 자료들의 서투른 조합이나 여러 단계의 편집이 낳은 충돌과 긴장을 보여주는 글이 아니다. 이 본문은 독자로 하여금 요단강 도하의 기적을 긴장감 속에서 추체험 하게하며 그 기적의 의미를 하나씩 되새겨보게 만들도록 의도된 정교한 글이다. There have been many debates on the structure of Joshua 3-4. The reason is that here the flow of the narrative is not smooth, and there are many repetitions and even phrases that seem to conflict with the context. So, the literary and theological unity of the text is often denied (e.g., Noth, Soggin, Butler, Görg, Nelson). This may have resulted from misunderstanding or ignorance of ancient Israelite literary practices that differ from modern literary standards. Sharing this perception, many scholars try to find a literary and theological unity in Joshua 3-4 (e.g., Seydon, Polzin, Peckham). Their research shows the possibility of reading Joshua 3-4 as a whole. However, even here, there is a risk that the reader’s perspective overrides the text. This is well exemplified in R. Polzin’s study that deduces from Joshua 4:14 the notion of “the complementarity of the Israelite religion,” and in B. Peckham’s study that finds out “a system of enclosure” in each section of Joshua 3-4. Thus, it requires a detailed linguistic analysis of the text so that our interpretation may be founded on objective linguistic phenomena. According to E. Talstra, “paying attention to linguistic phenomena as marks of the text’s connection means that we have access to the architecture of the text.” Therefore, this study attempts to discern the structure of Joshua 3-4 through linguistic discourse analysis. This study shows that Joshua 3-4 mainly consists of the words of the characters (officials, Joshua, Yahweh) and the description of the people’s obedience to them. The successive appearances of the characters’ words in the form of direct speech in the narrative context indicate that the text is deeply concerned with revealing the meaning of events rather than the natural unfolding of events in chronological order. This explains why the structure of Joshua 3-4 appears complicated. The successive appearance of the words of the characters given in the form of direct speech delays the unfolding of events, entailing the repetition of the same or similar words and expressions. In addition, the literary technique of “backtrack” and “resumption” is often used in Joshua 3-4. By this technique, the author narrates the important things related to the crossing of the Jordan River one after another without telling all at once, thereby inducing suspense in the reader’s mind. In sum, Joshua 3-4 is not a record that contains tensions and inconsistencies caused by a clumsy combination of various literary sources or stages of editing. This is an elaborate text intended to make the reader retrace the miracle of the Jordan River and reflect on its meaning. |
