Title

In this paper, I propose that the image of water in the Old Testament is closely related to the Spirit. Although water image in the Old Testament is associated with various themes or motifs, such as life or salvation, judgment, chaos, the Spirit, eschatological temple, human words or wisdom, purification, and living water, this study focuses on the case that water is used as an image of the Spirit.
This study is largely divided into two parts. The first half reviews the major studies of water in the Old Testament (Herbert G. May, Waylan B. Owens, Hyuk-Seung Kwon, David Toshio Tsumura, Robert Luyster, Else K. Holt, Seung-In Song, and Kivatsi Jonathan Kavusa).
The second half provides three reasons to support my claim that the image of water in the Old Testament sometimes symbolizes the Holy Spirit. First, Old Testament writers often use the language of “pouring out” when describing God’s giving of the Spirit (Joel 2:28-29; Isa. 32:15; 44:3-4). Of these, the word hr[ (“pour”) is used at Isaiah 32:15, in which Isaiah describes the transformation that the outpouring of the Spirit will bring upon Israel as a picture of changing their land through the addition of many plants to their land. The image of water is closely connected with the Spirit in this passage. In Isaiah 44:3-4, the word qcy (“pour”) is used for both water and the Spirit. This passage also uses the image of water to describe the work of the Spirit, and what draws our attention is the fact that the work of the restoration of the Spirit is likened to the function of water by plants. In this passage, Isaiah uses watering and the Spirit together (v. 3), and compares those who receive the Spirit to plants that grow because of a sufficient amount of water (v. 4). The second rationale for my claim is that in the Old Testament, water and the Spirit are sometimes mentioned together (Ezek. 36:25-27; Isa. 44:3-4). In these verses, water and the Spirit are mentioned together, and they are closely placed in the passage. Although these two do not directly support my argument that water is used as a symbol of the Spirit in the Old Testament, they serve as a basis for their close relationship. The last rationale is that in the writings of the prophets (Ezek. 36:25; Zech. 13:1-2; Isa. 4:4), water and the Spirit perform two identical functions: purifying sin and removing idols. For example, Ezekiel 36:25, where water and the Spirit are closely placed, says that the purpose of pouring water is to purify people from all their uncleanness and the sin of idolatry (36:18). Isaiah 4:4 also connects these two things with the work of the Spirit (“when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion and cleansed the bloodstains of Jerusalem from its midst by a spirit of judgment and by a spirit of burning”).
