This article aims to explore the relationship between historical meaning and redemptive-historical or Christo-centric meaning in the redemptive-historical interpretation. For this purpose, it investigates Calvin’s interpretation of Isaiah 61:1-3 in his commentary. Based on Luke 4:17-21, Calvin’s contemporaries including Luther interpret this passage as directly applying to Christ and the church. In comparison, Calvin makes it clear that historically this passage is concerned with the prophet Isaiah and the Israelites in Babylonian exile, and, at the same time, that typologically it points forward to Christ and the church. Likewise, in other messianic prophecies such as Isaiah 9:17; 11:1-9; 52:13-53:12, Calvin respects each passage’s literary and historical context and, simultaneously, stresses the ultimate locus of meaning in Christ’s work and the church. This type of interpretation has its basis on the presupposition that the Old and the New Testaments are a unified God’s revelation, Christ being its climax. In this interpretation, Calvin defines Isaiah’s audience as “the Church of Christ” or “the Kingdom of Christ,” which includes the believers in the New Testament age as well as the Israelites in Isaiah’s days; this facilitates Calvin to apply the message found in the Old Testament to his contemporaries. In his redemptive-historical interpretation, themes and metaphors also play an important role. For example, he connects the Old and the New Testaments by means of the theme of “captivity and liberty” (Isa 61:1; John 8:36) and the metaphor of the “tree of righteousness” (Isa 61:3; 1 Cor 3:7). This shows that Calvin’ s redemptive-historical interpretation is not merely a dogmatically oriented operation but also a literarily sensitive one, which explores a theological connection reflected in recurring themes and metaphors in the Bible. |
