The Verbal System of Hebrew in Genesis: From the viewpoint of tense, aspect, and modality
Many scholars have discussed the verbal system of biblical Hebrew for over 1,000 years but without presenting a clear blueprint. Moreover, theories held by scholars always had exceptions and such exceptions provided a ground for refutation. This study was conducted as an effort to solve this problem. The objective of this study was to analyze the verbal system of biblical Hebrew in Genesis from the viewpoint of tense, aspect, and modality. Instead of using an exhaustive theoretical discussion, this study investigated and analyzed primary materials found in Genesis through statistical methods. For the purpose of this study, we extracted 4,100 main sentences from the text of Genesis, excluding subordinate clauses. Then, nominal sentences and participial sentences used as predicate were excluded and, as a result, 3,484 sentences were examined. In relation to the theme of this study, the investigation and analysis focused on how the form of finite verbs in biblical Hebrew is associated with tense, aspect, and modality. From the results of this study was drawn the conclusion that the verbal form of Hebrew in Genesis was not a maker of tense or modality but a marker of aspect. The verbal form appears to be closely related to tense because perfective and imperfective aspect prefers a specific point in time. Because perfective tends to be expressed in a past point in time and imperfective does in a future point in time, aspect is easily confused with tense. Moreover, this study found that it is problematic to classify aspect dichotomously into perfect and imperfect, and suggested that it is desirable to add iterative aspect (including progression, habit, and continuation) and momentary aspect in addition to perfective and imperfective aspect.
